A quick glance at virtualizing OCS 2007 / Microsoft Lync 2010

So I'm dealing with an existing Enterprise OCS 2007 deployment that I want to consolidate. Can I virtualize it? Yes and no. The standard edition of OCS 2007 and R2 are not supported. Standard edition has all the roles install on one box. Microsoft has a nice article here on Running Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 R2 in a Virtualized Topology. Starting on page 5, there is a good chart that explains which roles can and cannot be virtualized…

(1) Archiving Server can perform archiving from a virtualized Enterprise pool, but must itself be deployed on a physical server. Virtualization of the Archiving Server is currently not supported.

(2) Monitoring Server can perform call detail record (CDR) collecting for a virtualized Enterprise pool, but must itself be deployed on a physical server. Virtualization of the Monitoring Server is currently not supported. Because voice workload is not supported with a virtualized Enterprise pool, the QoE Service (component of the Monitoring Server) was not tested and therefore is currently not supported in a virtualized Enterprise pool.

So do I settle for virtualizing just a few servers with OCS 2007, or do I go with an Enterprise deployment Microsoft Lync 2010 which is 100% supported in a virtualized environment? Just remember, the standard edition does not support the Directors in virtualized environments.

Here are some helpful links on Microsoft’s stance on virtualizing Lync 2010…

I will be posting more blogs on this subject later as I build the new environment and migrate users.
